yOni.com - web development project notes

yOni.com is a personal project. It was the first website that I developed back in 1996.

I was so excited by the potential of the internet as a medium for creative communication and I was passionate about supporting women to acknowledge and celebrate all of the unique qualities and flavours of their femininity. I wanted to reach other women who, like myself, worked in the male dominated world of computers and to provide a nourishing, feminine space amongst the hard edges of the technology. I wanted to create a women's circle in cyberspace!

Website Design Notes
Originally the front page was just the yOni poem. I wanted the site to load quickly and that was in the days when we thought a 14K modem was fast!

Some of the pages in this site have not been changed in nearly a decade. To be honest I cringe at some of them but I am reluctant to take pages down as they still provide information that people find useful, and I am too busy with other work to make the changes I would prefer.

The navigation was intended to be vague (and feminine?), to encourage an intuitive leap from one place to the other, to invite you to click on a word and take a journey.

Optimization notes
yOni.com is well optimised and has high intrinsic credibility in the eyes of the Search Engines due to its longevity and the longevity of its numerous inbound, one-way links. The site has a PageRank of 5.

The site (or pages thereof) rank #1 in Google on a whole range of terms including

'celebrating the feminine'
'supporting the feminine'
'women's sacred place'
'menstrual lodge'
'feminine power objects'
'feminine inspired art'
'smudge stick'

yOni.com provides me with a excellent vehicle in which I can write well optimised review pages of clients' projects with appropriate content, thus increasing their exposure, traffic and Search Engine ranking.
